Lane 1

This programme is designed to welcome children who show an interest in the sport of swimming. Participants will develop a solid foundation in stroke mechanics, fundamental athletic skills out of the water, racing skills (starts and turns), and lane discipline in a squad environment, while beginning their journey into the competitive side of swimming.

The core objectives of the programme are to nurture a love for the sport, build a strong team culture, establish a foundation of sporting values, and instil the habits of a good athlete.

Lane 2

Moving up from the previous squad programme, swimmers in the Lane 2 Squad will continue to refine their stroke mechanics and overall technical skills while gradually progressing into more demanding sessions.

At this stage, swimmers will be introduced to the fundamentals of age group swimming.

These include sound development of all four competitive strokes, expanding the spectrum of racing events, and introducing concepts such as stroke efficiency, resistance to movement in the water, awareness of stroke count and timing, and stroke tempo. Values such as good sportsmanship, teamwork, and commitment to training are key objectives of this programme.

Lane 3 Youth

The programme builds on the solid technical foundation developed in the previous squads and bridges the early stages of 4LSA’s competitive pathway with the key years for physiological adaptation.

Swimmers in Lane 3 Youth make a significant commitment to the sport, with an increase in weekly training sessions, progressive training loads, greater competition exposure and the development of athletic competencies in the pool and out of the water.

Lane 3 Junior

This programme is key to ensuring the correct implementation of 4LSA’s Long Term Athlete Development plan.

The overall demand, commitment and weekly training load align with the natural progression of technical and physiological adaptations that swimmers in this age group must develop to ensure long-term growth and progression within the sport.

The main objectives of the programme are to continuously refine technical skills and racing abilities; to maximise the physiological adaptations offered by the different windows of opportunity present in children of this age group; and to increase competition exposure and race preparation.

The ability to develop outcome goals supported by process goals is taught to the swimmers at this stage, and will become a fundamental aspect of their progression.

Lane 4 Youth

This programme is the pinnacle of our Youth Talent Programme and the gateway to 4LSA’s Performance Squads.

It is designed to achieve two main goals:

  1. Identify the most talented age group swimmers within 4LSA, as people, athletes and performers.
  2. Nurture a culture of excellence and positivity where athletes are provided with everything necessary to support future podium success.

Capacity training, robust development of all four competitive strokes, versatility in competition, and goal setting (outcome and process goals) to ensure sports performance are the pillars of this programme.

Training loads increase gradually, and the different energy zones and training stimuli are organised according to the planned training cycles. Swimmers must embrace the key events that coaches identify as markers for development, progression and positive adaptation to the programme. Local meets continue to be the core of a swimmer’s competition experience, while regional and national competitions gain more weight in each athlete’s individual plan.

Lane 4

Performance-oriented programme for swimmers who have progressed through the different stages of 4LSA’s foundational pathway. Technical abilities, racing profiles and training plans are modelled on an individual basis and developed in a squad training environment.

The dryland programme moves from general athleticism and foundational work into a more complex functional strength programme, aimed at morphological and physiological adaptations that support race performance. It also includes injury prevention work and recovery strategies.

The periodisation of training in this programme aims to expose swimmers to the complete spectrum of training energy zones, and is organised into training cycles that align with local and international competitions.

Goal setting (outcome goals and process goals) is a fundamental tool, and swimmers in this programme are expected to embrace it, along with race strategy and an understanding of how it relates to the training process.

Swimmers are encouraged to gain independence, take responsibility, and develop a sound understanding of the sport, an awareness of their individual performance traits, and accountability through all stages of the process.

Lane 4 Performance

Performance-oriented programme.

This is 4LSA’s top squad, designed for the most dedicated, ambitious, and self-driven swimmers who have a clear vision of what they aspire to achieve.

Technical abilities, racing profiles, and training plans are tailored to each individual and developed within a squad training environment. Athlete performance is at the centre of every decision. Key events continue to serve as markers of development, progression, and positive adaptation, while local meets become process-focused competitions that support preparation for the key local and international events planned across the different macrocycles of training.

Lane 4 Performance swimmers are expected to act as role models for every other swimmer in the programme, leading the way and setting the standards for future generations of 4th Lane Swim Academy.
